CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Christopher Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) finished 12th with a new personal record in the men's 5k, and Gabrielle Cortese (Franklin Springs, Ga.) placed 16th in the women's two-mile race with a personal-best of her own to lead Gardner-Webb to a pair of sixth-place showings at the Western Carolina Invitational on Saturday morning.
Lile led the line for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the men's 5k, placing 12th with a new PR of 16:14.93 - 33 seconds faster than his previous best. Keaton Poole (Spindale, N.C.) crossed the line in 16:32.19 to finish 22nd, while beating his own personal record by nearly a minute.
Sophomore track and field athlete Ezekiel Martin (Goldsboro, N.C.) finished with a time of 17:53.83 in his first race with the cross country program, while freshman Jerrod Timmons posted a time of 19:00.05 in his collegiate debut. Marcquel Woodard (Gainesville, Ga.) and Haden Baker (Morganton, N.C.) crossed the line with times of 19:42.66 and 21:01.07, respectively, as freshmen Brett Holida and Joseph Johnson recorded marks of 19:47.96 and 19:59.69, respectively, in their Gardner-Webb debuts. Logan Walker posted a time of 19:59.69 in his first race with the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Cortese paced the Runnin' Bulldogs in the women's two-mile race, finishing 16th with a personal-best of 12:21.03, as Sydney Davis (Granite Falls, N.C.) placed 46th with her own personal record of 13:07.92 - 32 seconds faster than her previous best. Jenna Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) turned in a time of 12:44.55 to finish 33rd, while freshman Hannah Jones and Rachel White (King, N.C.) posted times of 13:07.27 and 13:33.81, respectively.
Amy Turlington (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Michaela Williams (Nashville, N.C.) turned in times of 13:39.22 and 13:53.60, respectively, as newcomer Brittany Ollivierre crossed the line in 13:47.52 in her collegiate debut.
Gardner-Webb is back in action next Saturday when the Runnin' Bulldogs compete at the Asheville Invitational, hosted by UNC Asheville, at 9:00 am.
