Hot Shooting Lifts George Washington Over Gardner-Webb, 94-65

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- George Washington shot 58 percent in the first half and 54.4 percent in the contest, outscoring Gardner-Webb by a 53-24 margin in the opening 20 minutes en route to a 94-65 win on Tuesday afternoon in the Charles E. Smith Center.

George Washington (5-0), which ranked 15 points outside of the top 25 in the Associated Press Poll this week, knocked down 31-of-57 from the floor and 10-of-21 from behind the arc in the game. The Colonials held Gardner-Webb (1-4) to a field goal percentage of 39.7 percent, including a 46.2 percent mark in the second half, while George Washington won the battle on the glass by a 43-27 margin.

Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.) led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 3-for-6 effort from downtown, while David Efianayi (Orlando, Fla.) added 11 points with a 5-for-8 day from the floor. L'Hassane Niangane (Chalon, France) chipped in season-highs of seven points and five rebounds while Laquincy Rideau (West Palm Beach, Fla.) dished out a game-high seven assists.

Tyler Cavanaugh led five players in double figures for the Colonials with a game-high 20 points, as Yuta Watanabe added 19 points on a 5-for-7 day from the floor. Patricio Garino tallied 16 points with a 7-for-8 effort from the field, as Matt Hart and Kevin Larsen chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Joe McDonald hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Colonials stormed out of the gate in the first half, knocking down six of their first seven shots – including a pair of threes – to open an early 17-6 lead on a Garino lay-in at the 16:03 mark. George Washington would push the margin to 33-14 with a 16-8 run, capping the spurt with a bucket by Larsen with 10:39 to play in the first half.

A 20-10 run by the Colonials brought the game to halftime, with George Washington leading 53-24 after shooting 58.1 percent in the opening half and holding Gardner-Webb to a 9-of-29 clip from the floor.

The Runnin' Bulldogs played with the Colonials for much of the second half, maintaining the margin for the majority of the final 20 minutes while knocking down 46.2 percent of their attempts from the floor in the period. Burbage scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the final stanza as the teams each scored 41 points in the second half.

Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Friday when the Runnin' Bulldogs take the floor against Southeastern Louisiana on the first day of the Barclays Center Classic. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m. in West Point, N.Y. on the campus of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
